You’re here because you are ready to heal! You have reached the person to guide you on this journey.

Hi! I'm Laurel and I specialize in adolescent, individual and couples/marriage therapy, helping individuals and families navigate challenges during critical life transitions. Essence Counseling & Wellness focuses on supporting adolescents, young professionals and couples, as they work through issues such as anxiety, depression, and interpersonal struggles.

In addition to general therapy, I have deep understanding of the unique emotional and psychological experiences that accompany post partum depression and anxiety.

With my personal experience as a mother, my continued work with hospitals and families, as well as my continued education in Perinatal Mood Disorders, I am uniquely qualified to work with couples and families on issues related to parenthood.

  • Adjustment to parenting

  • Couple-related parental adjustment

  • Maternal and parental identity adjustment

  • Radical and mindful parenting

My Approach

I believe in both the science and healing art of psychotherapy. I utilize the empirical findings of psychological research to employ creative, holistic, culturally-attuned interventions in counseling. I take a decidedly strengths-based approach to promote healing and wellness. Wellness is a term to refer to more than just the absence of illness or symptoms. It means a healthy balance of the mind, body, and spirit that results in the experience of optimal wellbeing.  At Essence Counseling & Wellness I believe that our psychological well-being is intricately connected to the health of the people we love, the wellbeing and sustainability of our communities, and the creation of a just world around us.

The most important aspect of therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. Thus, I work to co-create a safe and caring environment in which people can work toward self-actualization, understanding, and balance within their lives and relationships. My clients find my style humorous and affirming while also challenging and stimulating. I work from an integrative theoretical approach; most often combining an insight-oriented approach while viewing issues from family systems and sociocultural perspectives.

I believe in our innate desire and ability to heal. Sometimes we need assistance in finding the path to wholeness and health. Other times we need someone to hold us accountable to change and growth. The purpose of Essence Counseling & Wellness is to provide the safe space and support where this can occur. I encourage clients to work through the current issues resounding in their life and develop insight into their own patterns of behavior and relationships to become empowered to enact sustainable change within their lives.
